What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is another word for gum disease. One of the first signs of serious gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation or swelling in the gums. Most of the time gingivitis tends to go by unnoticed because severe pain is not always present the beginning stages. It is not until the disease progresses that people become aware of the growing problem in their mouth. Gum disease is present in a variety of symptoms which may go unnoticed until they have progressed to painful levels.

Pay attention to indications such as:

  • Redness of the Gums
  • Receding Gum Line
  • Persistent Bad Breath
  • Loose Teeth
  • Sensitivity of the Gums
  • Pain when Chewing
  • Bleeding Gums from Brushing or Flossing

If you have two or more of these symptoms you should schedule an appointment with TCD Madison immediately, as these are all signs of serious gum disease. Don’t wait until it’s too late or risk having to get teeth pulled. Contact the premier Madison dentists at TCD as soon as possible.

Here are some easy-to-follow methods for preventing gum disease:

  • Brush teeth 15 minutes after every meal
  • Replace tooth brush every 2-4 months
  • Eat a well-balanced diet and avoid sugary or acidic foods
  • Floss Daily
  • Schedule regular cleanings with your dentist

What Causes Gum Disease?

Many things can cause gum disease, but the top contributors tend to be poor hygiene, smoking, and genetics. These factors aid bacteria accumulation in your mouth. The bacteria builds up until it forms a film, called plaque, over the tooth. Eventually, the plaque hardens and turns into a harmful tartar. This is when your health has reached a critical phase; the tartar buildup can spread into your teeth below the gum line. Once this happens there is no way for you to remove the tartar buildup without the help of a professional.

Factors Contributing to Greater Risk for Gum Disease

There are a variety of daily activities which contribute to gum disease. There are a few factors which put you at greater than normal risk:

  • Smoking or using a tobacco-related products
  • Having a family history of gum disease
  • Being diabetic
  • Hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
  • Clenching or grinding your teeth
  • Failing to clean your teeth regularly

Immediate Treatment is the Most Effective Treatment

It is vitally important to seek help from the Madison dental care team at TCD if you think your gums are at risk or if you’re already experiencing symptoms of gum disease. The longer you put off treatment, the more gum disease will spread. Not seeking immediate treatment is dangerous. The spread of the infection will lead to a loss of bone, as well as cause teeth to loosen or fall out.  The sooner you come in to our Madison dental clinic the better your chances are at saving your teeth and reversing gum disease. If the damage is too severe and requires surgical treatment, our team of dental professionals will refer you to a periodontist. Don’t let gum disease ruin your beautiful smile and harm your health.
